The Compilation of the Vidiyā Sāgar Grańth - Mehimā Prakāś [1776]

Vidyā Sāgar Graṅth—’the Graṅth [book] of the ocean [Sāgar] of wisdom [Vidyā]’—is the name given within the Sikh tradition to a legendary corpus said to have been compiled at Anaṅdpur under the patronage of Gurū Gobiṅd Siṅgh. This extensive work, also referred to as Vidyāsar Graṅth, Vidyādhar Graṅth, or Samuṅd Sāgar Graṅth, was believed to contain the works of innumerable poets, scholars, and mystics.

According to lore, the volume weighed around nine mauṅḍs (approximately 320 kilograms) and was lost in the Sarsā River when Gurū Gobiṅd Siṅgh and the Sikhs evacuated Anaṅdpur in 1705.

Portions of this compilation are thought to survive in the compositions now recognized as parts of the Dasam Graṅth, Some scholars suggest that these texts may be fragments rescued from the river’s waters, or they might be earlier copies preserved by devotees prior to the incident. Records indicate that several of Gurū Gobiṅd Siṅgh’s poets stationed at Anaṅdpur—among them Amrit Rāi, Anī Rāi, Śyām, Saināpati, Ālam, Tahikan, Dayā Siṅgh, Sukhā Siṅgh, and Dharam Siṅgh—were largely tasked with translating venerable Sanskrit works into Braj, Sādh Bhākhā, and Paṅjābī. Such translations would likely have formed the principal content of the Vidyā Sāgar Graṅth.

Mentions of this repository appear in earlier Sikh sources, such as Mahimā Prakāś (1776 CE), Kesar Siṅgh Chhibbar’s BaṅsāvalīNāmā (1769 CE), and Srī Gur Pratāp Sūraj Graṅth (1843 CE). These references collectively uphold the notion that, through comprehensive translation and scholarship, Gurū Gobind Siṅgh’s court aimed to make a wide range of spiritual and historical knowledge more accessible to a broader audience—an endeavor poetically symbolized by the “Ocean of Wisdom” enshrined in the title Vidyā Sāgar. ਸਾਖੀ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਜੀ ਕੇ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼-ਕਰਣ ਅਰੁ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਕੀ ਬਾਨੀ ਕੀ

The Sākhī of the Satgurū’s compiling of worldly Knowledge and the composition of Bachitra Nāṭak [The Wondrous Drama]:

ਦੋਹਰਾ।ਬੰਦ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਕੋ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਧਰਿਓ ਮਨ ਦਿਆਲ।ਪੰਡਤ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਭਾਖਾ ਰਚੀ ਬਿਸਾਲ॥੧॥

ਦੋਹਰਾ। ਦੀਨ-ਦਇਆਲ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਿਆਨ-ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਖੇ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਆਇਆ। ਕਈ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ (ਪੋਥੀ-ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ) ਦਾ ਇਕੱਠ ਕਰਕੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ-ਖ਼ਿੱਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਬੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਸਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ॥੧॥

Dohrā —The Benevolent of the meek, Kalghīdhar [the wearer of the royal plume] and True King, envisioned to illuminate the world with Vidyā [knowledge]. Gathering the Pańḍits, and the various Purān and other texts, They set forth the task of translating and expanding these texts into the common tongue of the land॥੧॥

ਚੌਪਈ।ਆਗਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਦਿਆਲ।ਬਿਦਆਵਾਨ ਪੰਡਤ ਲੇਹੁ ਭਾਲ।ਜੋ ਜਿਸ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਗਿਆਤਾ ਹੋਈ।ਵਹੀ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸੰਗ ਲਿਆਵੇ ਸੋਈ॥੨॥

ਰਹਿਮਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ‘ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਪੰਡਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਵੋ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਵੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਨਾਲ਼ ਲੈ ਆਵੋ’॥੨॥

Chaupāī—The Satgurū, the ever-merciful One, issued Their command— ‘Seek out the learned Paṇḍits and scholars, bring forth those who have obtained such knowledge. Whosoever is versed in wisdom, let them come, bearing such Purāṇs and texts in their grasp’॥੨॥

ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੋ ਸਿਖ ਚਲਾਏ।ਪੰਡਤ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਲਿਆਏ।ਬਾਨਾਰਸ ਆਦ ਜੋ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਠੋਰ।ਪੰਡਤ ਸਭ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸਿਰ ਮੋਰ॥੩॥

ਫਿਰ ਦੇਸ਼-ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਪੰਡਿਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਵਣ। ਬਾਨਾਰਸ ਵਰਗੇ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਕੇਂਦਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮੰਨੇ-ਪ੍ਰਮੰਨੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਸੱਦੇ॥੩॥

Then, Sikhs were sent across the lands, That the Sańgat might return, bearing Paṇḍits, Purāṇs, and other texts alongside them. From the halls of learning, from Benāras and beyond, The most esteemed and revered scholars were summoned forth॥੩॥

ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਕੈ ਆਇ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਸਭ ਭਏ।ਬਹੁ ਆਦਰ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਜੋ ਦਏ।ਮਿਰਜਾਦਾ ਬਾਧ ਖਰਚ ਕੋ ਦਇਆ।ਖੇਦ ਬਿਭੇਦ ਕਾਹੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਇਆ॥੪॥

ਦਸਮੇਸ਼ ਪਿਤਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋਏ। ਅਤੇ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਧੰਨ ਵੱਜੋਂ ਕਦਰਦਾਨੀ ਨਿਯਮਬਧ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਰਚਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਡਿਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਤਕਲੀਫ਼ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਤਕਰਾ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ॥੪॥

They assembled in congregation before the Satgurū, receiving esteemed reverence and honor from the Master. As a token of reverence, their sustenance was ordained, Their needs met, their dignity preserved, and no hardship nor slight was allowed to touch them॥੪॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਨਿਕਟ ਬੁਲਾਏ।ਤਾਕੋ ਸਭ ਬਿਧ ਦਈ ਬੁਝਾਏ।ਕਰ ਭਾਖਾ ਲਿਖੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਭਾਈ।ਮੁਨਿ ਮੋਕੋ ਦੇਹੁ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਈ॥੫॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਹਰ ਲਿਖਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ। ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਏ ਕਿ, ‘ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਵਾਮ ਦੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਰਜਮਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਕਰੋ। ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਅਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਥਾ ਰੂਪ ਸਹਿਤ ਸੁਨਾਈ ਜਾਵੇ’॥੫॥

The master expositors of the Gurmukhī script were summoned into His sacred presence, And the entirety of the task was entrusted to them with divine command: ‘Render these texts into the people's tongue and transcribe them into Gurmukhī with utmost precision. Present them before us in the form of Kathā [sermonical discourse], so that their wisdom may be spoken and heard in truth’॥੫॥

ਦੋਹਰਾ।ਨਨੂਆ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਿਆਮ ਕਬ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਭਾਟ ਜੋ ਆਹਾਂ।ਭਈ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਗੁਰ ਬਡੇ ਗੁਨਮ ਗੁਨ ਤਾਹਾ॥੬॥

ਦੋਹਰਾ।ਨਨੂਆ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ, ਕਵੀ ਸ਼ਯਾਮ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਭਟ, ਨਿਹਚਲ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਆਦਿ ਵੱਡੇ ਗੁਣਵਾਨ ਕਵੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ ਹੋਇਆ॥੬॥

Dohrā —In the sacred court of the Gurū, a congregation of esteemed poets assembled—Nanūā Bairāgī, Kavī Shyām, Brahm Bhaṭ, and Nihchal Faqīr, all present in reverence॥੬॥

ਅਵਰ ਕੇਤਕ ਤਿੰਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੋ। ਲਿਖੇ ਸਗਲ ਪੁਨਿ ਕਰੇ ਬਖਾਨੋ।ਚਾਰ ਬੇਦ ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਰਾਨਾ।ਛੇ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਆਨਾ॥੭॥

ਹੋਰ ਓਥੇ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਕਵੀ ਸਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀੰ ਗਿਣੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ। (ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਲਿਖ-ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਚਾਰ ਵੇਦ, ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ, ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ, ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਆਦਿ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਆਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਰਚੀਆਂ॥੭॥

There were countless other poets present, their names too many to recount. Yet, I have spoken of those I know—those who, through their writings, composed commentaries on the four Vedas, the eighteen Purāṇas, the six Śāstras, the Smṛtis, and more॥੭॥

ਚੌਬੀਸ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕੋ ਭਾਖਾ ਕੀਨਾ।ਚਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਚਾਰ ਚਲਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਵੀਨਾ।ਭਾਖਾ ਬਨਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਕਰਾਈ।ਭਏ ਪਰਸਨ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਮਨ ਭਾਈ॥੮॥

(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਵੀਆਂ ਨੇ) ਚੌਬੀਸ ਅਵਤਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ। ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ-ਸੌਂ-ਚਾਰ ਚਰਿੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ (ਚਰਿੱਤ੍ਰੋਪਾਖਿਆਨ) ਦਾ ਨਵਾਂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਰਚਿਆ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕਰਕੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਗਏ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਮਨੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਏ॥੮॥

The poets rendered into verse the chronicles of the twenty-four Avtārs—Chaubis Avtār, and composed a new Grańth—the Caritropākhyān, containing four hundred and four tales. These compositions were then recited before Śrī Kalghīdhar Jī [the esteemed wearer of the royal plume], and upon hearing them, the Satgurū was deeply pleased within Their heart॥੮॥

ਸਭ ਸਹੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਖਾ ਕਰੀ।ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸਾਗਰ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਪਰ ਚੜੀ।ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਏ ਤਿਆਰ। ਕਛ ਸੋਭਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਾ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ॥੯॥

ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਵਾਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ‘ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਸਾਗਰ’ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਈਆਂ। ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ‘ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਸਾਗਰ’ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਸਦੀ ਸ਼ੋਭਾ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਕਦਾ॥੯॥

All the Sanskrit works were translated into the tongues of the common people. These writings were compiled into a Grańth known as Vidyā Sāgar—the Ocean of Knowledge. Thus was Vidyā Sāgar brought into being, a work whose splendor knows no bounds, whose grandeur defies all measure॥੯॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਕਹਿਓ ਬਿਖਾਨਾ। ਮੈਂ ਭਾਖਾ ਰਚੀ ਪੜੇ ਸੁਗਮ ਸੁਜਾਨਾ।ਪੜਤੇ ਸਹੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਮਨ ਉਕਤਾਈ। ਭਾਖਾ ਪੜਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਲਗਾਈ ॥੧੦॥

ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੁਖੋਂ ਫ਼ੁਰਮਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ: ‘ਇਹ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਅਸਾਂ ਸੁਜਾਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਘੜ ਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਰਚੇ ਹਨ। ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਿਆਂ ਦਿਮਾਗ਼ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਸਾਂ ਤਰਜਮੇ ਆਮ ਜ਼ੁਬਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਚੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਪੜ੍ਹਣਹਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਅ ਲਗਾ ਰਹੇ’॥੧੦॥

The Satgurū proclaimed: ‘These translations have been composed for the wise and the discerning [the Sikhs]. The weight of Sanskrit wearies the mind, and thus, we have rendered these works into the language of the people, so that the hearts of those who seek may remain forever immersed in their pursuits’॥੧੦॥

ਦੋਹਰਾ। ਭਾਖਾ ਰਚੀ ਦਿਆਲ ਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮਨ ਭਏ ਅਨੰਦ। ਦੁਰਗਮ ਸੁਗਮ ਭਏ ਸਕਲ ਪੜ ਸਿਖ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਭੰਗ॥੧੧॥

ਦੋਹਰਾ। ਇਹ ਦੀਨ-ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਸਭਨਾ ਦੇ ਮਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸਮਝਣ ਨੂੰ ਔਖੀਆਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸੌਖੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਕੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਖੰਡਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ॥੧੧॥

Dohrā —These translations, composed and compiled by the merciful and compassionate Gurū, resonated with the hearts of all, whilst they [the Sikhs] forever basked in Anańd [spiritual tranquility]. What was once veiled in complexity and inaccessible, became clear and effortless to grasp to all. Whosoever read them, never faltered or wavered in their mission॥੧੧॥

ਤੋਮਰ ਛੰਦ। ਲੀਏ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸਗਲ ਬੁਲਾਈ। ਦਈ ਦਛਨਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬੜਾਈ।ਸਭ ਲੇਤ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਾ। ਦੀਏ ਬਸਨ ਭੂਖਨ ਧੰਨਾ॥੧੨॥ ਧੰਨੁ ਲੇਤ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨੁ। ਕਹੈ ਧੰਨ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਧੰਨੁ।ਹੋਇ ਬਿਦਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰ ਕੇ ਗਏ।ਆਨੰਦ ਸਭਿ ਬਿਧ ਭਏ॥੧੩॥

ਤੋਮਰ ਛੰਦ। ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਏ। ਬੜੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਦਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਸਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਸਤਰ, ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਧਨ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ॥੧੨॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ “ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ” ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ। ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪੋ-ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰ ਗਏ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੰਦ ਫੈਲ ਗਿਆ॥੧੩॥

Tomar Chaṅd—All the Brāhmaṇs were summoned, and with great love, generous offerings were bestowed upon them. Each received their due share and departed with hearts brimming with joy. They were adorned with fine garments, ornaments, and wealth, their hands filled with treasures॥੧੨॥ Taking their offerings, they rejoiced, proclaiming, "Blessed, blessed is the Satgurū!" And so, with reverence and respect, they took leave and journeyed back to their homes. A tide of bliss spread among them, filling their spirits with Anańd [spiritual tranquility]॥੧੩॥

A Comprehensive Compilation of Knowledge

From the narrative, it becomes evident that the Vidyā Sāgar represents a large-scale scholarly endeavour undertaken at the behest of the Tenth Gurū. The primary goal was to translate and compile important scriptures and knowledge systems—most notably the four Vedas, the eighteen Purāṇas, six Śāstras, various Smṛti texts, and other works—into a common language and script [Gurmukhī].

This compilation aimed at making previously esoteric or difficult content accessible to the broader populace, including Sikhs and other seekers. By gathering Brahmins and pandits, from centers of learning such as Benāras, then organising and funding their work, the Gurū sought to bridge the gap between such advanced texts and the lay community. The repeated emphasis on translations and expansions suggests an extensive, careful process, ensuring the Grańth would be a comprehensive ‘Ocean of Knowledge’—hence the name ‘Vidyā Sāgar.’

Interestingly, while many experts and laymen alike assert that Shyām was a pen-name of the Gurū, Mehimā Prakaś illustrates that Kavī Shyām, in contrast, was a scholar and/or poet under the patronage of the Gurū themselves, who, along with others, compiled the Caritropākhyān and Chaubis Avtār. Notably, Shyām is indeed found in the secondary auxiliary compilation, the Dasam Grańth today, alongside other poets.
